Fracture patterns in viscoplastic gravity currents

چکیده

Constant-flux gravity currents of viscoplastic fluid remain axisymmetric when extruded onto a dry horizontal plane. However, if the plane is coated with shallow layer water, current suffers dramatic non-axisymmetric instability in which localized $v$ -shaped cuts appear outer edge where contact water. These ‘fractures’ lengthen and guide subsequent radial outflow, leading to distinctive flower-like patterns. This pattern formation process illustrated for two materials, an aqueous suspension Carbopol, mixture water joint compound (a kaolin-based, commercially available product). The fracturing spreads over entire upper surface deeper baths are used, complicating extrusion can be removed entirely ambient replaced by immiscible liquid comparable viscosity, indicating that presence at key process. We conjecture underlying mechanism fracture under tension material, exacerbated

Mixing in gravity currents

We study entrainment in lock-release gravity currents using highly spatially resolved optical transmission experiments and quantitative analysis of the available potential energy of the flow. The principal results provide a resolution to the debate regarding the mechanism and degree of mixing in the head of a gravity current during the slumping phase. The nature of the complex internal mixing s...

Gravity Currents in Aquatic Canopies

A lock exchange experiment is used to investigate the propagation of gravity currents through a random array of rigid, emergent cylinders which represents a canopy of aquatic plants. As canopy drag increases, the propagating front varies from the classic profile of an unobstructed gravity current to a triangular profile. Unlike the unobstructed lock exchange, the gravity current in the canopy d...

Entraining gravity currents

Entrainment of ambient fluid into a gravity current, while often negligible in laboratory-scale flows, may become increasingly significant in large-scale natural flows. We present a theoretical study of the effect of this entrainment by augmenting a shallow water model for gravity currents under a deep ambient with a simple empirical model for entrainment, based on experimental measurements of ...

Gravity flow instability of viscoplastic materials: the ketchup drip.

In contrast with simple liquids such as water, milk, honey, which easily flow as a continuous jet when poured from a vessel, pasty materials such as mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, puree, etc., fall by fits and starts in a wide range of flow rates. This may, for example, be observed when ketchup or mayonnaise is pushed from a tube at a sufficient height over a plate: although surface tension effe...

Fracture of a biopolymer gel as a viscoplastic disentanglement process.

We present an extensive experimental study of mode-I, steady, slow crack dynamics in gelatin gels. Taking advantage of the sensitivity of the elastic stiffness to gel composition and history we confirm and extend the model for fracture of physical hydrogels which we proposed in a previous paper (Nature Mater. 5, 552 (2006)), which attributes decohesion to the viscoplastic pull-out of the networ...
